definition: key terms in Geography

RISK - This probability of a hazard event causing harmful consequences such as injury, loss of belongings or death.
NATURAL HAZARD EVENT - An event caused by natural processes which threaten people's lives or belongings.
PLATE TECTONICS - The theory that the Earth's crust is made up of separate moving sections called plates.
PRIMARY EFFECTS - Things which happen as a direct result of a natural hazard - for example, an earthquake causes a tsunami. These happen straight away -  like a chain reaction :)
SECONDARY EFFECTS - Things which happen after a natural hazard has occurred - for example, economic effects, disruption of transportation and diseases.
