revision: Brazil

FAVELAS-
PROBLEMS
[ECONOMIC]
-Poor transport and communication.
-Roads are not paved and are used as refuse dump. In winter, they turn into mud.
-Work is often temporary, informal and low-paid.
-Self-built with cheap or recycled materials.
-Water is obtained from the stream or from the nearest public tap which is one mile away. There are usually queues here and sometimes there is no water.
-Almost everybody that works, works in the informal section.

[ENVIRONMENTAL]
-In the rainy season, the area often floods
-The stream is very polluted.
-Often close to industry on marginal, sometimes polluted land.
-There is no electricity or sewage system.
-Public services, like refuse collection, do not come into areas that pay no local tax.

[SOCIAL]
-Adult literacy is 32%
-There are no schools in the area.
-Many illegal activities take place.
-Poor sanitation, making disease common.
-Only 1 woman and 2 men have a good education.
-Infant mortality is very high.

AMAZONIA-

Amazonia is famous for being the region with the Amazon Rainforest, as well as being one of the places with the wettest climates and densest vegetation. This place had got everything, damp weather for vegetation, quarries for economic activity; it is also home to many different and unique species of animals as well as humans. Although its population density isn’t as great as South East Brazil, there are plenty of opportunities to find economic activity amongst all the nature and vegetation because the rainforest soil is rich in nutrients; the river provides a mean of transportation which makes it even more efficient to live in this extremely green part of Brazil.

PLANTS-
"Stranger Figs" they leech onto other plants and strive for the sunlight.
"Lianas" are vines that swing from tree to tree in order to reach the sunlight.
"Butress Roots" cover a lot of ground surface area for nutrients and keep the tree standing since the roots are big, and cannot dig in deep as there are not much nutrients deep in the ground.

Cutting down trees breaks the cycle of nutrients since the trees that we cut down in the canopy layer produces all the energy from Photosynthesis.

CLIMATE-
The air in the Amazon Basin is extremely moist, which causes clouds to form leading to a lot of rainfall yearly.
Convectional rainfall forms due to heating of the ground by the sun. As the air close to the ground is heated, it becomes lighter and begins to evaporate. When the air rises it begins to cool and condenses. As the water vapour condenses back into water droplets, clouds are formed, causing a lot of rainfall.

SOUTH EAST-
South East Brazil is one of the busiest regions with a large population density and a wide range of opportunities for economic activity. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery with the sea on one side and the mountain on the other; you can enjoy the variety in this region. This also allows efficient transport of any means. Although the drainage is not as great as Amazonia, its mountainous relief is enough to allow the vegetation to prosper. All there is to say about this part of Brazil is ‘variety’, there’s a lot of it.

HOLIDAY IN BRAZIL-
(Credits to Felipe :D)
In Rio the typical food you can eat is "feijoada", which is a mix of black beans, pork, cassava, and is always served with rice.

For activities,
On the beach, you can ride a "banana boat"
Visit the famous Copacabana beach.
Visit a "mountain" called "Pão de açucar" which means "Sugar Loaf"
And visit the "Cristo Redentor" or known in English as "Christ the Redeemer" that was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
